About Dorsoduro

Venice's art and student district, home to the Accademia, Guggenheim Collection, and the Zattere promenade, with the best aperitivo scene and a liveliness that survives even in winter.

Dorsoduro, literally 'hard back', a reference to the firm ground on which it stands, is the southernmost of Venice's six sestieri, facing the Giudecca canal to the south and the Grand Canal to the north. It is home to Venice's university (Ca' Foscari) and is the most art-rich district in Venice, containing the Gallerie dell'Accademia, the Peggy Guggenheim Collection, Santa Maria della Salute, and the Punta della Dogana contemporary art museum.

The Zattere, a long, south-facing promenade along the Giudecca canal, is one of Venice's great walks, particularly on sunny winter days when the light is extraordinary and the ice-cream parlours and cafés are filled with locals. Campo Santa Margherita is the social heart of the student Venice, a large campo filled with bars, coffee shops, and market stalls, surrounded by student housing.

The district is less overwhelmed by tourism than San Marco or Cannaregio's main drag, and retains the feeling of a Venetian neighbourhood with actual residents, particularly in the quieter calli around the Squero di San Trovaso and the residential streets near the Carmini church.

Did you know? Dorsoduro translates as 'hard back', referring to the relatively firm ground on which it stands, it was one of the first areas of the lagoon islands to be developed because it did not require as many wooden piles as softer areas.
