About Acqua Alta & MOSE Barrier
Venice sinks 2mm per year as sea levels rise, the seasonal acqua alta flooding has shaped city life for centuries, while the completed MOSE barrier system now protects the lagoon from the Adriatic.
Acqua alta, literally 'high water', is the seasonal flooding that occurs in Venice when a combination of astronomical high tides, strong southerly winds (the sirocco), and low atmospheric pressure in the Adriatic pushes water up through the lagoon and into the city. The phenomenon is most common between October and March, and Piazza San Marco, the lowest point in Venice, is flooded on approximately 100 days per year.
Venice is also sinking: the city's wooden piles have compressed the underlying sediment, and the pumping of underground water in the 20th century accelerated subsidence. Combined with rising sea levels from climate change, the acqua alta events are becoming more frequent and more severe. The catastrophic flood of November 1966, which reached 194 cm above sea level, was a turning point that galvanised international conservation efforts.
After decades of controversy and delay, the MOSE (Modulo Sperimentale Elettromeccanico) system of 78 hinged metal gates at the three lagoon inlets was finally declared operational in October 2020, successfully preventing several flooding events since then. The €8 billion project is one of the largest civil engineering works in Italian history.
Did you know? The catastrophic flood of November 1966 reached 194 cm above sea level, still the highest recorded flooding in Venice's history, and directly led to UNESCO's campaign to save the city.
