About San Giorgio Maggiore

Palladio's masterpiece church of 1566 on its own island across from Piazza San Marco, with a bell tower offering possibly the finest views of Venice, and Tintoretto's Last Supper inside.

The church of San Giorgio Maggiore stands on its own small island directly opposite the Piazza San Marco across the Bacino di San Marco, its white marble facade and elegant campanile forming one of the most iconic elements of the Venetian skyline. The church was designed by Andrea Palladio and construction began in 1566, though the facade was completed only in 1610, after Palladio's death.

Palladio's solution to the challenge of designing a church facade, how to integrate the tall central nave with the lower side aisles using classical temple forms, was enormously influential on Western church architecture. The facade uses two interpenetrating classical pediments: a large one spanning the full width of the facade and a taller, narrower one centered on the nave, creating a complex layered composition that was copied throughout Europe.

Inside, the church contains two major works by Tintoretto: The Last Supper (1594), one of his finest late works, and The Gathering of the Manna. The bell tower can be ascended for a panoramic view of Venice, many consider it superior even to the Campanile di San Marco, because it includes that tower in the view.

Did you know? Palladio's facade solution for San Giorgio Maggiore, using two overlapping classical pediments to solve the two-height basilica problem, was copied by architects across Europe for the next 300 years.
