About Puente de la Trinidad

The oldest surviving bridge in Valencia, a graceful 15th-century Gothic stone bridge over the old Turia riverbed, now the main pedestrian crossing between the old city and the Turia Gardens, with fine views in both directions along the river park.

The Puente de la Trinidad is Valencia's oldest surviving bridge, a 15th-century Gothic stone bridge that once crossed the river Turia and now spans the former riverbed, today the linear Turia Gardens park. The bridge was built in 1401 and is approximately 100 metres long with nine pointed stone arches. It is the most historically significant of Valencia's several historic bridges and connects the old city neighbourhood of El Carmen directly with the Turia Gardens. Walking across it offers excellent views along the park in both directions. The bridge is named after the nearby Hospital de la Trinidad, founded in the 14th century.

Did you know? The conversion of the Turia riverbed into a park was one of the great contested urban planning battles of 20th-century Spain. The national government initially wanted to use the dry riverbed as a highway, a plan that would have built a motorway through the centre of Valencia. Citizens and city government successfully fought against this proposal, eventually winning approval for the park design.
