About Basílica de la Virgen de los Desamparados

The 17th-century basilica housing Valencia's most venerated image, the Patroness of Valencia, an extraordinary late-medieval statue that attracts millions of pilgrims, and whose annual procession during Las Fallas is one of the most spectacular devotional events in Spain.

The Basílica de la Virgen de los Desamparados stands adjacent to Valencia's Cathedral on the Plaza de la Almoina, connected to it by a walkway. The basilica was built between 1652 and 1667 to house the image of the Virgen de los Desamparados, the Patron Saint of Valencia, a small polychrome wooden statue dating from the late 15th century that is one of the most venerated Marian images in Spain. The interior is decorated with frescoes by Antonio Palomino and contains one of the finest collections of Baroque art in Valencia. During Las Fallas in March, the annual Ofrenda de Flores, the Offering of Flowers, fills the square outside with hundreds of thousands of flowers that are formed into a floral mantle around the image of the Virgin.

Did you know? The Ofrenda de Flores during Las Fallas is one of the largest participatory religious events in the world: over 100,000 people participate in the two-evening procession, dressed in traditional Valencian costume, and the flowers they carry are arranged into a floral mantle on the image of the Virgin that typically reaches a height of over 15 metres.
