About City of Arts and Sciences
Valencia's futuristic architectural masterpiece, a vast complex by Santiago Calatrava and Félix Candela housing a science museum, planetarium, oceanarium, and opera house, built in the former bed of the Turia River.
The City of Arts and Sciences is Valencia's most celebrated modern landmark, a futuristic architectural complex built between 1998 and 2005 in the former dry bed of the Turia River that was diverted in 1957 after catastrophic flooding. The complex was designed primarily by Valencia-born architect Santiago Calatrava, with the Hemisfèric (IMAX cinema and planetarium) and the Palau de les Arts opera house among his most iconic works, alongside the Oceanogràfic (Europe's largest aquarium) designed by Félix Candela. The complex extends over two kilometres along the old river bed and has been praised as one of the outstanding urban planning achievements of the late 20th century in Europe, transforming a flood-prone river channel into a world-class cultural and scientific attraction.
Did you know? The City of Arts and Sciences cost approximately 1.3 billion euros to build, significantly over the original budget, leading to a major political controversy in Valencia that included allegations of corruption against the regional government.
