About Malvarrosa Beach
The city beach of Valencia, a long urban promenade beach just 20 minutes from the old town, where Valencians have swum, eaten paella in the beachfront restaurants, and celebrated Las Fallas for generations.
Malvarrosa is the main urban beach of Valencia, a wide sandy beach stretching for several kilometres north of the port, with a long promenade backed by paella restaurants, beach bars, and the iconic palm-lined paseo that is the quintessential image of summer in Valencia. The beach is reached by tram from the city centre in about 20 minutes. The area behind the beach, the Paseo de Neptuno and the surrounding streets, is famous for its concentration of traditional paella restaurants, where the authentic Valencian paella with its chicken, rabbit, flat beans, and saffron-coloured rice has been served in the same way for generations. The nearby house where Blasco Ibáñez, the Valencian novelist who set his novel 'Flor de Mayo' among the fishermen of this coast, lived is now a museum.
Did you know? The word 'paella' comes from the Latin 'patella' (meaning pan), via the Valencian/Catalan word for the flat round pan in which the dish is cooked. The dish originated in the rice-growing areas around the Albufera lagoon south of Valencia, where it was a rural workers' meal made with whatever was available in the fields.
