About Museo de Bellas Artes

One of the most important fine art museums in Spain, housed in a former seminary beside the Turia gardens, with an outstanding collection of Valencian Gothic painting, Spanish Golden Age masters, and the largest collection of Joaquín Sorolla outside Madrid.

The Museo de Bellas Artes de Valencia is one of the finest art museums in Spain, second only to the Prado among Spanish regional collections. Housed in a former Baroque seminary building from the 17th century, the museum contains an outstanding collection spanning from medieval Valencian altarpieces to 20th-century works. The highlights include a major collection of Valencian Gothic painting from the 14th and 15th centuries, when Valencia was one of the most innovative painting centres in Europe; an important collection of Spanish Golden Age masters including Velázquez, El Greco, and Ribera; and the most significant collection of Joaquín Sorolla paintings outside the Sorolla Museum in Madrid, the Valencian impressionist known as the 'Painter of Light' whose sun-drenched Mediterranean scenes captured the life of late 19th-century Valencia. The museum is free to enter.

Did you know? Joaquín Sorolla, whose work is prominently featured in the museum, is the best-selling Spanish artist by reproduction rights in the world, his paintings of Mediterranean light and Valencian life are among the most reproduced images in global art publishing.
