About Venaria Reale
A UNESCO World Heritage royal hunting palace 15 km from Turin, the "Versailles of Italy" with the breathtaking Hall of Diana, restored Baroque gardens, and grand fountains.
La Venaria Reale is one of the grandest royal residences in Europe, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that has been called the "Versailles of Italy." Built in the second half of the seventeenth century as a hunting palace for Charles Emmanuel II of Savoy, it was subsequently enlarged by successive Savoy rulers until it became an enormous complex covering 80,000 square metres of floor space, surrounded by 90 hectares of formal gardens and park. The palace's most spectacular room is the Galleria di Diana (Hall of Diana), designed by Juvarra in 1716, a vast, light-filled gallery of extraordinary architectural refinement, with tall windows, gilded stucco decorations, and a painted ceiling that is one of the finest examples of Italian Baroque interior design. The palace fell into disrepair after the Napoleonic conquest and was used as a cavalry barracks for 150 years. A massive restoration project begun in the 1990s has transformed it back into one of Italy's great cultural sites, with fully restored state rooms, the spectacular gardens with their original fountains, and excellent temporary exhibition spaces.
Did you know? The restoration of Venaria Reale cost over 300 million euros and took 15 years, one of the most expensive cultural restoration projects in Italian history.
