About Piazza San Carlo
Turin's elegant "drawing room", a perfectly proportioned Baroque square flanked by twin churches, historic cafes beneath arcades, and a bronze equestrian statue of Emanuele Filiberto.
Piazza San Carlo is widely considered the finest Baroque square in Turin and one of the most elegant urban spaces in Italy. Designed in the 1630s by Carlo di Castellamonte, it measures approximately 168 metres by 76 metres and is framed on three sides by uniform arcaded buildings with continuous porticoes at street level. The fourth side is closed by two virtually identical Baroque churches, Santa Cristina and San Carlo Borromeo, whose curved facades frame the entrance to the square. At the centre stands the equestrian statue of Emanuele Filiberto, the "Iron Duke" who restored Savoy independence at the Battle of Saint Quentin in 1557, shown sheathing his sword in a famous gesture of peace after victory. The square is lined with some of Turin's most historic and elegant establishments: Caffè Torino (with its famous bronze bull on the pavement, whose tail tourists rub for good luck), Caffè San Carlo (opened 1822), and several high-end jewellers and confectioners who have occupied these premises for generations.
Did you know? The small bronze bull embedded in the pavement in front of Caffè Torino is one of Turin's most-touched tourist attractions, locals say it brings seven years of bad luck if you step on it with your left foot by mistake.
