About Piazza Vittorio Veneto
The largest Baroque piazza in Italy, stretching gracefully from the city centre down to the Po river, lined with cafes and gelaterias beneath sweeping arcades.
Piazza Vittorio Veneto is the largest Baroque square in Italy, measuring 500 metres in length and 100 metres in width. Designed by Giuseppe Frizzi and completed in the 1830s, it forms the grand conclusion of Turin's main east-west axis, descending gently from the city centre to the banks of the Po. The piazza is lined on both long sides by handsome arcaded neoclassical buildings of uniform height, creating a perfectly proportioned enclosure of monumental scale. At the eastern end, the Gran Madre di Dio church (1831) closes the vista with its classical portico, reflected in the river below. The square is the favourite evening gathering place of Turin's students and young residents, the dozens of bars and cafes beneath the arcades are packed on warm evenings. Beyond the Gran Madre, the Ponte Vittorio Emanuele I bridge carries the road over the Po to the hills beyond, where the Basilica di Superga is visible on the skyline.
Did you know? Vermouth was invented in Turin in 1786 by Antonio Benedetto Carpano, the city that gave the world its first aperitif now has over 80 varieties of the drink produced in Piedmont.
