About Royal Palace of Turin (Palazzo Reale)

The Palazzo Reale di Torino was the principal residence of the House of Savoy from 1563 until 1865, when the Italian capital moved from Turin to Florence. Together with eleven other Savoyard royal residences in and around Turin, it forms a UNESCO World Heritage Site recognised in 1997. The current palace facade, with its austere but imposing design, was completed in the seventeenth century. The interior was repeatedly redecorated to keep pace with changing royal tastes, resulting in a succession of breathtaking rooms spanning Baroque, Rococo, and neoclassical styles. The Throne Room, the Audience Hall, and the Blue Drawing Room are particularly magnificent. The palace also contains the Royal Armoury, one of the finest collections of medieval and Renaissance arms and armour in Europe, as well as the Cabinet of Curiosities, the Savoy Library, and the Royal Gardens designed by André Le Nôtre (who also designed Versailles). The Court of Honour, entered through elaborate iron gates, leads to the main facade.
