About Gran Madre di Dio
An elegant neoclassical church on the Po riverside, modelled on the Pantheon, and famous in popular mythology as a possible location of the Holy Grail.
The Gran Madre di Dio church stands at the eastern end of Piazza Vittorio Veneto, elevated on a raised terrace above the right bank of the Po. Built between 1818 and 1831 to a design by Ferdinando Bonsignore as a votive church celebrating the restoration of the Savoy monarchy after the Napoleonic period, it is modelled closely on the Roman Pantheon with its columned portico and domed rotunda. Two flanking statues on the portico steps represent Faith and Religion. Popular esoteric legend holds that the statue of Faith, who holds a chalice, appears to be pointing toward a specific spot on the hillside behind the church, supposedly indicating where the Holy Grail is buried. The church became a minor pilgrimage site for treasure hunters and esoteric tourists as a result. The interior is cool and serene, with marble floors and a simple coffered dome, and offers a beautiful view back across the Po toward Piazza Vittorio.
