About Piazza Tasso
The lively main square of Sorrento, centred on a monument to the poet Torquato Tasso and framed by outdoor cafés, the social hub of the town and starting point for exploring the peninsula.
Piazza Tasso is the beating heart of Sorrento, the main square where locals and visitors converge, where the passeggiata is performed each evening, and where the rhythm of Sorrentine daily life is most visible. The square is named for Torquato Tasso (1544-1595), the great Renaissance epic poet who was born in Sorrento and wrote Jerusalem Delivered. A statue of the poet stands in the centre of the square, looking out over his hometown. The piazza is animated at all hours: in the morning it fills with market traders and commuters; in the afternoon with tourists taking coffee at the cafés with views toward the sea; in the evening with the passeggiata, when the entire town seems to come out to walk, greet, and be seen. The square sits at the junction of the main streets of the old town and is the natural gathering point before exploring the Cathedral, Marina Grande, or the cliffs above the sea. The views from the edges of the square toward the Bay of Naples are magnificent.
Did you know? Torquato Tasso, born in Sorrento in 1544, wrote Jerusalem Delivered in 1581, one of the most widely read poems in Europe for two centuries. He died in 1595, two days before he was to be crowned poet laureate in Rome by Pope Clement VIII.
