About Sedile Dominova

A remarkable 15th-century open loggia with a yellow and green majolica dome, the former assembly hall of the Sorrento nobility, now a social club for locals and one of the most distinctive small architectural gems on the Amalfi Coast.

The Sedile Dominova is one of the most distinctive and unexpected buildings in Sorrento, a surviving example of the covered loggias that once served as assembly points for the local nobility in southern Italian towns. Built in the 15th century, it is a small open structure with pointed arches on three sides, roofed with a remarkable majolica-tiled dome in yellow and green that glows in the southern light. Inside, the walls are decorated with 18th-century frescoes depicting scenes from Sorrentine history. The Sedile Dominova was originally the meeting place of the town's noble families, the Sedile (literally "seat" or "assembly") being the governing body of the local aristocracy. Today it functions as a social club and card-playing room for local elderly men, and in so doing preserves something of its original character as a gathering place for the upper social strata of the town. Visitors can generally look in from the outside; entry is restricted to members. The combination of its striking majolica dome, its 15th-century architecture, and its current living function makes it one of the most charming survivals in the town.

Did you know? The Sedile Dominova is one of only a handful of sedili, noble assembly loggias, to survive in southern Italy. Most were demolished in the 18th and 19th centuries when the aristocratic governance structures they served were swept away by French and then Italian unification.
