About Marina Grande

Sorrento's original fishing village, reached by a steep descent from the clifftop town, colourful traditional boats (gozzo sorrentino), excellent fresh fish restaurants, and an authentic community that predates the tourist town above.

Marina Grande is the ancient fishing quarter of Sorrento, sitting at the base of the cliff below the modern town and accessible by a steep winding road or a long flight of steps. Unlike the Marina Piccola, the ferry port on the other side, Marina Grande has retained much of its original character as a working fishing community. The harbour is filled with the traditional wooden fishing boats called gozzi sorrentini, painted in bright colours according to their owners' traditions. The beach is a mixture of pebble and coarse sand, and the seafront is lined with restaurants and trattorias that specialise in fresh fish, the daily catch is often visible being brought in by the fishermen in the early morning. The community here is genuinely separate from the tourist infrastructure of the town above: families have lived here for generations, maintaining the traditions of the sea. The morning fish market, when it operates, is a brief but vivid glimpse into a way of life that has changed little in centuries.

Did you know? The gozzo sorrentino, the traditional Sorrentine fishing boat, has a hull design that can be traced back to ancient Greek and Roman boats. Its low freeboard and broad beam make it ideal for calm Mediterranean waters but it can also handle the sudden storms that characterise the Bay of Naples.
