About Azenhas do Mar

A dramatic clifftop village in the Sintra municipality, its white houses cascading down the Atlantic cliff face to a natural seawater pool, one of the most photographed villages on the Portuguese coast.

Azenhas do Mar is a small coastal village in the Sintra municipality, approximately 10 kilometres north of Sintra town along the Atlantic coast. The village is famous for one of the most striking natural settings on the Portuguese coast: white-painted houses clustered on a dramatic rocky cliff dropping directly into the Atlantic, with a natural seawater swimming pool carved into the rocks at the base of the cliff. The name means 'water mills of the sea', referring to tidal mills that once operated here. The village is reached by winding coastal roads from Sintra and is best appreciated in the late afternoon when the westward-facing cliffs are lit by warm golden light. There is a small café and restaurant at the clifftop with extraordinary views. The natural sea pool at the base of the cliff is accessible in summer.

Did you know? The name Azenhas do Mar means 'water mills of the sea' in Portuguese, the village takes its name from the tidal mills that once operated here in the medieval and early modern periods, using the rise and fall of the Atlantic tides to grind grain.
