About Peninha Chapel and Viewpoint

A 16th-century chapel perched on the highest granite outcrop of the Serra de Sintra at 486m, with sweeping views over the Atlantic coast, the Tagus estuary, and on clear days as far as Setúbal, Sintra's most remote and atmospheric viewpoint.

The Peninha Chapel (Nossa Senhora de Peninha) occupies one of the most dramatically positioned sites in the Serra de Sintra, a bare granite summit at 486 metres above sea level, commanding views that encompass the entire Atlantic coastline from Cabo da Roca northward, the Tagus estuary, and on exceptionally clear days, the Setúbal peninsula to the south. The chapel was built in the 16th century on a site of earlier hermitage, rebuilt and expanded in the 17th and 18th centuries. According to local tradition, a young deaf-mute shepherdess was miraculously cured here in 1410 after a vision of the Virgin Mary, and the chapel was built to mark the site. It is a place of active pilgrimage; an annual festival takes place on 8 September. The approach road and final ascent on foot through the granite boulders is part of the experience.
