About Real Alcázar of Seville
A UNESCO World Heritage royal palace of extraordinary Mudéjar splendour, where Moorish artisans built paradise gardens and gilded halls for Christian kings across seven centuries of reinvention.
The Real Alcázar of Seville is the oldest royal palace in Europe still in active use, and a pinnacle of Mudéjar architecture. Built on the site of a 10th-century Moorish fortress, the complex was transformed over centuries as Christian monarchs commissioned Islamic craftsmen to create palatial rooms in a breathtaking fusion of cultures. The Palacio de Don Pedro, built by Pedro I of Castile in 1356, contains the celebrated Patio de las Doncellas, a reflecting pool flanked by intricate plasterwork arches, and the Hall of the Ambassadors, whose gilded cedar dome represents the celestial sphere. UNESCO listed the Alcázar alongside Seville Cathedral and the Archivo de Indias in 1987. The Alcázar also contains extensive Moorish gardens: the Mercury Pool, English Garden, and Grotto Gallery, all still used by the Spanish royal family today.
Did you know? The Alcázar served as the Water Gardens of Dorne in Game of Thrones, making it one of the most recognisable filming locations in Spain.
