About Seville Cathedral

The largest Gothic cathedral in the world and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, housing the tomb of Christopher Columbus and the magnificent Giralda bell tower.

Seville Cathedral was built between 1401 and 1528 on the site of the Great Mosque of Seville, deliberately constructed to be the largest church in Christendom. With a floor area of 11,520 square metres, it remains the largest Gothic cathedral ever built and the third-largest church in the world. The cathedral contains over 80 chapels, an extraordinary collection of art including works by Murillo, Zurbarán, and Goya, and the monumental tomb of Christopher Columbus, his coffin borne aloft by four royal pallbearers representing the kingdoms of Castile, León, Aragon, and Navarre. The Giralda, originally a 12th-century Almohad minaret, rises above the cathedral as its bell tower, its Moorish shaft topped by a Renaissance belfry added after the reconquest.

Did you know? When the canons planned the cathedral in 1401, they reportedly declared: "Let us build a church so large that those who see it completed will take us for madmen."
