About Plaza de España

A magnificent semicircular Renaissance Revival palace complex built for the 1929 Ibero-American Exposition, featuring tiled alcoves for every Spanish province and rowboats on a curved canal.

Plaza de España is one of the most spectacular civic spaces in Europe, built in 1928 as the centrepiece of the 1929 Ibero-American Exposition. Designed by architect Aníbal González, the semicircular complex stretches 200 metres across and is flanked by two baroque towers. A moat-like canal curves around the base, crossed by four ornate bridges representing the medieval kingdoms of Spain. Most extraordinary are the 48 tiled alcove benches that line the inner colonnade, each representing one of Spain's provinces with hand-painted azulejo tiles depicting the history and geography of each region. The central fountain and open plaza create one of the most photographed locations in Spain, while the building now houses regional government offices and a military museum. Many films have used the plaza as a backdrop, including Lawrence of Arabia and Star Wars Episode II.

Did you know? The Plaza de España appeared as a desert city in Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones and as a location in the 1962 film Lawrence of Arabia.
