About Hostal dos Reis Católicos
The former royal pilgrim hospital commissioned by Ferdinand and Isabella in 1501, now operating as a Parador luxury hotel, it is the finest building in the Praza do Obradoiro and a masterpiece of Spanish Plateresque architecture, with four Gothic courtyards and a richly carved chapel.
The Hostal dos Reis Católicos (Hotel of the Catholic Monarchs) was built between 1501 and 1511 on the north side of the Praza do Obradoiro by order of Ferdinand and Isabella (the 'Catholic Monarchs'), following their visit to Santiago in 1501. It was designed as a royal hospital to care for pilgrims on the Camino de Santiago, providing free medical care, food, and shelter to sick or exhausted pilgrims arriving in Santiago, and was one of the most ambitious hospital buildings in 16th-century Europe. The building is a masterpiece of the Plateresque style (early Spanish Renaissance): the main portal is one of the most elaborately carved doorways in Spain, with saints, grotesques, heraldic devices, and Renaissance ornament covering every surface. The interior has four Gothic courtyards, a beautiful chapel (still in use), and the extraordinary sequence of rooms that once housed the hospital wards. It was converted into a luxury Parador hotel in 1954 and is now one of the most prestigious and historically significant hotels in Spain.
Did you know? The tradition that pilgrims with a completed Credencial may receive three free meals (typically breakfast) in the Hostal dos Reis Católicos dining room dates from the original function of the building as a royal hospital, where all pilgrims were entitled to free care. Today the tradition is maintained symbolically: pilgrims present their Credencial at the service entrance and are admitted to the dining room for a basic pilgrim meal. The experience of eating breakfast in a 500-year-old royal hospital, surrounded by other pilgrims, is one of the more quietly moving aspects of the Santiago experience.
