About Praza da Inmaculada & Cathedral North Façade
The quiet square on the north side of the cathedral, site of the Baroque north façade (Azabachería), the massive Monastery of San Martino Pinario, and the traditional arrival square for pilgrims coming on the Camino del Norte. Less visited than the Obradoiro, it has an atmosphere of contemplative stillness.
The Praza da Inmaculada (Square of the Immaculate Conception) is the northernmost of the four squares surrounding the cathedral, and the one with the most domestic, contemplative character. The north façade of the cathedral, the Azabachería (Black Amber Façade, named for the jet-carving workshops that historically occupied this side of the square), was rebuilt in the 18th century in a restrained Baroque style by Clemente Fernández Sarela (1758-1765), replacing the original Romanesque north portal. The massive south wall of the Monastery of San Martino Pinario (the second-largest monastery in Spain) dominates the west side of the square. The Praza da Inmaculada was historically the square where pilgrims arriving from the north on the Camino del Norte (Northern Way, the coastal route from the Basque Country) would first see the cathedral, the route approaches from the north, and the square is the first cathedral square visible. A statue of the Immaculate Conception stands in the centre. The square is typically quieter than the Obradoiro and the Quintana, making it the preferred arrival point for those who want to see the cathedral without crowds.
Did you know? The Camino del Norte (Northern Way), the coastal Camino from Irun on the French border along the Basque and Cantabrian coast to Santiago, is the second most popular Camino route after the Camino Francés, with approximately 20,000-25,000 pilgrims completing it annually. It runs through some of the most dramatic coastal scenery in Spain: the Cantabrian cliffs, the green hills of Asturias, and the dramatic Galician estuaries. The route passes through Bilbao, San Sebastián, Santander, Oviedo (where it meets the Camino Primitivo, the original Camino), and Ribadeo.
