About Monte Pedroso & Views of Santiago
The hill overlooking Santiago de Compostela from the west, Monte Pedroso (463m) provides the finest panoramic views of the cathedral towers rising above the granite old town, with forests, pathways, and the Santa Susana park at its base.
Monte Pedroso is the forested hill immediately west of Santiago de Compostela, rising to 463 metres. A network of walking paths ascending from the Parque da Alameda and the Parque de Santa Susana at the foot of the hill reaches the summit in approximately 45 minutes. The summit and the intermediate viewpoints offer the finest panoramic views of Santiago available: the cathedral towers (the Obradoiro towers at 79m, the Berenguela clock tower at 75m) are directly visible above the old town granite roofscape; on clear days the Galician hills extend in every direction, and the white granite of the city below has a distinctive quality in the afternoon and evening light. The forest of eucalyptus and pine on the slopes of Monte Pedroso is a characteristic Galician landscape, the eucalyptus (Eucalyptus globulus) was introduced to Galicia from Australia in the 19th century for pulp timber and now dominates the hillsides. The Parque da Alameda at the foot of the hill, with its double row of oak trees and the viewpoint over the Praza do Obradoiro, is one of the most popular promenades in Santiago.
Did you know? Monte do Gozo (Mount of Joy), the hill on the eastern approach to Santiago from which arriving pilgrims first see the cathedral towers, was in the Middle Ages the point where pilgrims began weeping and singing with joy at the sight of their destination. Whoever among the travelling company first saw the towers was crowned king or queen for the day, a tradition that pilgrim lore links to the French surname 'Le Roy' (the king), though the etymology is not established.
