About Parte Vieja (Old Town)

San Sebastián's compact medieval old town, a grid of narrow streets packed with the highest concentration of pintxos bars per square metre in the world, where bar-hopping is the city's primary ritual and Basque creative cuisine reaches its apotheosis.

The Parte Vieja, the Old Town of San Sebastián, is built on a small peninsula between La Concha beach and the harbour, its compact grid of streets dating from the rebuilding after the Napoleonic Wars (the city was largely destroyed in 1813). Today it is famous above all for its pintxos bars: every street is lined with bars whose counters overflow with elaborate small plates, anchovies on bread, gambas (prawns), tortilla, Ibérico ham, Gilda (olive, anchovy, and pickle on a skewer, the first pintxo ever created), and the ritual of moving from bar to bar with a glass of txakoli (the local sharp white wine) or a small beer is the evening activity par excellence. The square at the heart of the old town, the Plaza de la Constitución, with its numbered balconies (rented for bullfights when the plaza served as a bullring in the 18th and 19th centuries), is one of the most beautiful squares in the Basque Country. The old town also contains the Basque Museum (San Telmo Museoa), the city's main market (Bretxa), and the church of San Vicente.

Did you know? San Sebastián (population ~180,000) has more Michelin stars per capita than any other city in the world, with restaurants including Arzak (3 stars), Akelarre (3 stars), Martín Berasategui (3 stars), and Mugaritz (2 stars) nearby. The total number of Michelin stars within 30 kilometres of the city is extraordinary by global standards.
