About San Sebastián International Film Festival
One of the great film festivals of the world, held each September since 1953, it awards the Golden Shell to the best film and attracts major directors and stars to the Kursaal and theatres of San Sebastián for one week of cinema.
The San Sebastián International Film Festival (known in Spanish as Zinemaldia) is one of the select group of film festivals accredited by the International Federation of Film Producers Associations (FIAPF) in its top "A" category of competitive feature film festivals, in the company of Cannes, Venice, Berlin, Locarno, Karlovy Vary, and Tokyo. Founded in 1953, it is held annually in September, centred on the Kursaal Auditorium, and awards the Golden Shell (Concha de Oro) for best film, the Silver Shell (Concha de Plata) for best director, best actor, and best actress, and the Special Jury Prize. The festival historically has shown a particular interest in Spanish and Latin American cinema, as well as European art house films, and has provided important early recognition for directors who later became international figures. Past Golden Shell winners have included Francis Ford Coppola (1969, The Rain People), Víctor Erice (1973, The Spirit of the Beehive), and Terrence Malick (1974, Badlands). The festival transforms San Sebastián for one week each September, filling the Kursaal and other theatres with film-goers.
Did you know? The San Sebastián Film Festival is the only Category A film festival in Spain and the oldest continuously running international film festival in the Spanish-speaking world. Woody Allen has a long association with the festival: he received the Donostia Award (lifetime achievement) in 2004, and later shot the film 'Rifkin's Festival' (2020) in San Sebastián, set at the festival itself, which opened that year's edition.
