About Piazza dei Priori

Piazza dei Priori, the medieval main square of Volterra, with the Palazzo dei Priori of 1208 to 1257, one of the oldest town halls in Tuscany, its front covered with coats of arms.

The Palazzo dei Priori was begun in 1208 and finished by 1257, all in stone, and its front is covered with the arms of the Florentine officials who governed the town. Inside, the council hall has a large fresco of the Annunciation of the late fourteenth century, and the tower gives a wide view. Facing it stands the Palazzo Pretorio with its tower.

The square is free at all times. The Palazzo dei Priori needs a ticket; from November it closes on Tuesdays and earlier on weekdays. The council hall can be closed for meetings.
