About Guarnacci Etruscan Museum

The Guarnacci Etruscan Museum in Volterra, one of the oldest public museums in Italy, with hundreds of carved Etruscan funerary urns and the slender bronze figure called the Shadow of the Evening.

The museum grew from the collection that the abbot Mario Guarnacci gave to the town in the eighteenth century. It holds hundreds of urns of alabaster, tufa and terracotta from the fourth to the first century BC. Its most famous pieces are the Ombra della sera, a thin bronze figure, and the Urn of the Married Couple.

The museum needs a ticket. From November it closes on Tuesdays and earlier on weekdays. Allow time: there are dozens of rooms on three floors.

Did you know? The Ombra della sera in the Guarnacci Museum of Volterra is an Etruscan bronze only about 57 centimetres tall, famous for being extremely thin.
