About Via Flaminia: Ancient Roman Road

The great Roman consular road built in 220 BC connecting Rome to Rimini (Ariminum), 320 kilometres of engineered road that served as the spine of Roman Italy for over a thousand years.

The Via Flaminia was built in 220 BC by the Roman consul Gaius Flaminius, who gave it his name. Running 320 kilometres from the Forum Boarium in Rome through the Tiber valley, over the Apennine mountains via the Furlo Pass, and down to the Adriatic coast at Ariminum (modern Rimini), it was one of the most important roads in Roman Italy and one of the great engineering achievements of the ancient world.

The Via Flaminia served simultaneously as a military road for moving legions, a commercial artery for trade, and a route for the movement of people, ideas, and culture between Rome and the Adriatic coast and beyond. It remained the principal route between Rome and the north for over a thousand years. The modern SS3 road (Strada Statale 3) largely follows the original Roman alignment, and in many sections the ancient road surface, bridges, and milestones are still visible or preserved. The Arch of Augustus in Rimini marked its official terminus.

Did you know? The Via Flaminia was built in 220 BC, over 2,200 years ago, yet the modern SS3 national road largely follows the same route today, testament to the Roman engineers' choice of optimal terrain.
