About Gradara Castle
A perfectly preserved 13th-century medieval fortress 20 kilometres north of Rimini, forever associated with the tragic lovers Paolo and Francesca, immortalised by Dante in the Inferno.
Gradara is one of the best-preserved medieval walled towns in all of Italy, a perfectly intact fortress village perched on a hilltop, its walls, towers, and gate still completely intact after seven centuries. The castle was built by the Malatesta family in the thirteenth century and expanded in the fourteenth.
Gradara's eternal fame comes from Dante Alighieri. In the fifth canto of the Inferno, Dante encounters the souls of Paolo Malatesta and Francesca da Rimini in the circle of the Lustful, condemned to be swept forever by violent winds. Francesca tells her story: married to Gianciotto Malatesta (Paolo's deformed older brother), she fell in love with Paolo. Her husband discovered them and killed them both, around 1285–1289. The castle at Gradara was the Malatesta stronghold where this tragedy is traditionally said to have occurred. Dante's portrayal of Francesca, sympathetic, eloquent, beautiful, became one of the most beloved passages in all Italian literature.
