About Castel Sismondo

Sigismondo Pandolfo Malatesta's fifteenth-century fortress at the edge of the old city, built between 1437 and 1446, now housing part of the Federico Fellini Museum.

Castel Sismondo was the personal fortress and residence of Sigismondo Pandolfo Malatesta, Lord of Rimini, constructed between 1437 and 1446. It represented the most modern military architecture of its time, a transitional design that addressed the new threat of artillery by replacing the tall, slender towers of medieval castles with lower, thicker bastions designed to absorb cannon fire.

The castle's design has been attributed by some scholars to Filippo Brunelleschi, the great Florentine architect who designed the dome of Florence Cathedral, though the attribution remains debated. What is certain is that Sigismondo supervised the construction closely and that the castle expressed his political authority and military power at a time when he controlled a small but brilliant Renaissance court. After centuries of varied uses, including as a prison, the castle was restored and in 2021 became a central component of the Fellini Museum, its ancient walls now housing immersive exhibitions about the city's most famous son.

Did you know? Some architectural historians believe Filippo Brunelleschi, designer of Florence Cathedral's dome, may have contributed to the design of Castel Sismondo, though the attribution remains debated.
