Rimini (ancient Ariminum) was one of the most important cities of Roman Italy, a concentrated walk through the Arch, the Bridge, the Forum, and the excavated remains brings two thousand years of continuous history to life.
Rimini's concentrated Roman heritage is unique in Italy: no other city of comparable size has so many well-preserved first-rank Roman monuments within such a small walking area. The Arch of Augustus (27 BC), the Tiberius Bridge (14–21 AD), the Piazza Tre Martiri (ancient forum), the Domus del Chirurgo (2nd–3rd century AD), and the remains preserved in the Museo della Città all lie within a 15-minute walk of each other.
Ariminum was founded as a Roman colony in 268 BC, at the junction of the Via Flaminia and the Via Aemilia, two of the great Roman roads, on the Adriatic coast. It quickly became one of the most important military and commercial cities in Roman Italy, the gateway between Rome and the north. At its height in the first and second centuries AD, it was a prosperous city of perhaps 20,000–30,000 inhabitants with forums, temples, theatres, an amphitheatre, and the public buildings characteristic of a major Roman municipality. This remarkable ancient heritage can be explored in a half-day walk through the modern city.
