About Lungarni Riverside

Pisa's most elegant urban space, the promenades along both banks of the Arno river, lined with Renaissance and Baroque palaces, connecting the Palazzo Blu to the city's ancient bridges.

The Lungarni, the Arno riverside promenades, are Pisa's most beautiful urban thoroughfares, stretching along both banks of the river through the heart of the historic city. The name simply means 'along the Arno', and the two sides, Lungarno Mediceo, Lungarno Pacinotti, Lungarno Galilei, and the others, are lined with some of the finest secular architecture in Pisa: Renaissance and Baroque palaces, medieval towers, churches, and the elegant 14th-century Palazzo Blu.

The Arno divides Pisa into two distinct zones: the northern part (Tramontana) with the Campo dei Miracoli and the university, and the southern part (Mezzogiorno) with the city's commercial and residential heart. The medieval and Renaissance bridges that cross the river at various points are the connective tissue between these two halves. The Lungarni are most beautiful in the evening, when the buildings and bridge lights reflect in the river, and the promenading Pisans fill the waterfront.

Did you know? The Arno at Pisa is significantly wider than at Florence because it has received several large tributaries by this point and is approaching the sea, creating a broader, more tranquil waterway ideal for the reflection of riverside palaces.
