About Santa Maria della Spina
A miniature Gothic gem on the Arno embankment, built in the 13th–14th centuries and originally said to house a thorn (spina) from the Crown of Thorns, one of the most exquisitely detailed small churches in Italy.
Santa Maria della Spina is one of the most exquisite small buildings in all of Italy, a miniature Gothic oratory built in stages between the 1230s and the early fourteenth century directly on the Arno embankment, its feet almost in the water. The name comes from 'spina' (thorn), referring to a relic of the Crown of Thorns that was kept here from the early fourteenth century.
The building is extraordinarily rich in Gothic sculptural detail: gables, pinnacles, canopied niches with statues of saints and apostles, Gothic tracery windows, and a profusion of carved decoration covering virtually every surface. Many of the original sculptures are now in the Museo Nazionale di San Matteo to protect them from damage; the figures on the exterior today are mostly copies. In 1871, the entire building was dismantled stone by stone to protect it from flooding and rebuilt on its current slightly elevated site, one of the earliest examples of architectural heritage preservation in Italy.
Did you know? In 1871, Santa Maria della Spina was taken apart stone by stone and rebuilt on a raised platform to protect it from Arno flooding, one of the earliest deliberate architectural preservation projects in Italian history.
