About Campo dei Miracoli
The 'Field of Miracles', a UNESCO World Heritage ensemble of four great monuments set on a perfect green lawn: the Cathedral, Baptistery, Leaning Tower and Camposanto, together one of the world's supreme architectural achievements.
The Campo dei Miracoli, Field of Miracles, is the great lawn at the north end of Pisa's historic centre, on which four of the world's most important medieval buildings stand in extraordinary proximity: the Cathedral (1064), the Baptistery (1152), the Leaning Tower/Campanile (1173), and the Camposanto Monumentale (1277). Together they form one of the supreme ensembles of medieval architecture anywhere in the world and were inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987.
The setting is itself remarkable: a flat green meadow of about three hectares, once outside the city walls, where the white marble monuments seem almost to float on the grass. The ensemble is best seen from the northwest, where all four buildings are visible simultaneously. The name 'Campo dei Miracoli' was popularised by the writer Gabriele d'Annunzio in the early twentieth century; previously the space was called Piazza del Duomo.
Did you know? The name 'Campo dei Miracoli' (Field of Miracles) was not medieval but was coined by the Italian poet Gabriele d'Annunzio in the early 20th century, before that, the space was simply called Piazza del Duomo.
