About Musée Marmottan Monet

The world's largest Monet collection, over 100 works in a converted hunting lodge in western Paris, including the painting that gave Impressionism its name: Impression, Sunrise, painted in Le Havre in 1872.

The Musée Marmottan Monet, housed in a 19th-century hunting lodge in the 16th arrondissement near the Bois de Boulogne, holds the world's largest collection of Claude Monet's work, over 100 paintings including the entire series of late water lily canvases, plus works by Pissarro, Renoir, Berthe Morisot, and Gustave Caillebotte. The star piece is Impression, Sunrise (1872), painted from a hotel window overlooking the port of Le Havre at dawn: the critic Louis Leroy mockingly named the Impressionist movement after this single canvas in 1874, not knowing he was giving history its greatest art-movement name. The museum also holds an extraordinary collection of medieval illuminated manuscripts and the personal collection of Paul Durand-Ruel, the gallerist who first championed the Impressionists.

Did you know? Impression, Sunrise was stolen from the Marmottan in 1985 along with eight other paintings in an audacious daylight raid, the works were hidden in Corsica for five years and recovered in 1990.
