About Catacombes de Paris
The world's most famous ossuary, containing the remains of over six million Parisians arranged in vast subterranean galleries beneath the 14th arrondissement.
The Catacombes de Paris occupy a small section of the 280-kilometre network of former limestone quarries running beneath the city. From 1786 to 1860, the overflowing cemeteries of Paris, led by the Saints-Innocents, whose stench had become a public health emergency, were systematically emptied and their contents transferred to the quarries. Today the ossuary holds the remains of more than six million Parisians, their bones arranged with eerie artistry into walls of skulls and femurs stretching through the underground galleries. The entrance on the Place Denfert-Rochereau descends some twenty metres to the galleries. The official tour covers about two kilometres; the entire quarry network extends far beyond, explored illegally by the cataphiles who continue to venture through the dark tunnels.
Did you know? The bones of more than six million Parisians lie in the Catacombs, nearly three times the current above-ground population of Paris, transferred from overflowing cemeteries between 1786 and 1860.
