About Belleville & Street Art
Paris's most diverse and creative neighbourhood, birthplace of Édith Piaf, with the city's finest concentration of street art and vibrant immigrant communities from North Africa and China.
Belleville is the most diverse, creative, and underrated neighbourhood in Paris, a hilltop community in the 10th, 11th, 19th, and 20th arrondissements that feels genuinely different from the rest of the city. It was an independent village until its annexation by Paris in 1860, and something of that village character persists today. Home to significant North African, Chinese, Jewish, and African communities, Belleville has the most varied food culture in Paris, the most vibrant outdoor market, and extraordinary street art.
Edith Piaf, the Little Sparrow, was born at 72 Rue de Belleville in 1915. Today a plaque marks the spot. The Parc de Belleville, at the top of the hill, offers one of the finest panoramic views in Paris, comparable to Montmartre but far less visited. The rue Denoyez, a short pedestrian street behind the Belleville metro station, has been given over entirely to street artists and is entirely covered in murals, stencils, and spontaneous art that changes constantly.
Did you know? Édith Piaf, France's most beloved singer, was born at 72 Rue de Belleville in 1915, legend says her mother gave birth to her on the doorstep.
