About Canal Saint-Martin

A 4.5-kilometre canal built by Napoleon, lined with iron footbridges, swing bridges, and plane trees, now the hipster heart of Paris with the city's coolest cafés and boutiques.

The Canal Saint-Martin is one of the most romantic and atmospheric waterways in Paris, a 4.5-kilometre canal commissioned by Napoleon in 1802 to supply fresh water to the city, running from the Arsenal basin near the Bastille to the Canal de l'Ourcq in the north. Its nine locks, five iron footbridges, swing bridges, and rows of plane trees create an exceptionally picturesque urban landscape.

For most of the 20th century the canal was a working industrial waterway serving the workshops and warehouses of eastern Paris. In the 1990s it underwent a remarkable transformation: artists, designers, and young entrepreneurs moved into the affordable spaces alongside the canal, and it gradually became one of the most fashionable neighbourhoods in the city. Today the banks of the Canal Saint-Martin are lined with independent boutiques, concept stores, cafés, and restaurants that represent Paris at its most contemporary and creative. The outdoor terraces along the canal are among the finest places to enjoy an afternoon drink in all of Paris. Ateliers Hermès and the Hotel du Nord (featured in Marcel Carné's 1938 film) are among the canal's landmarks.

Did you know? The film "Amélie" (2001) features a famous scene of Amélie skipping stones on the Canal Saint-Martin, the film transformed the canal's profile overnight.
