About Eiffel Tower
The iconic iron lattice tower on the Champ de Mars, built for the 1889 World's Fair and now the most visited paid monument on Earth.
The Eiffel Tower is the most recognisable structure in the world and the defining symbol of France. Built between 1887 and 1889 under the direction of engineer Gustave Eiffel, the actual design by his employees Maurice Koechlin and Émile Nouguier, it was erected as the entrance arch for the 1889 Exposition Universelle, celebrating the centennial of the French Revolution. Standing 330 metres tall including its antenna, it held the record as the world's tallest man-made structure for 41 years.
Constructed from 18,038 pieces of puddled iron held together by 2.5 million rivets, the tower sways up to 7 centimetres in the wind and is repainted every seven years using 60 tonnes of specially formulated Eiffel Tower Brown. Since the millennium, 20,000 LED bulbs make it sparkle for five minutes on the hour every night. Originally mocked as an "ugly iron monster," it was saved from scheduled demolition in 1909 because its radio antenna proved invaluable for military communications during World War One.
Did you know? The Eiffel Tower was scheduled to be demolished in 1909, its radio antenna saved it by making it an indispensable military communications asset.
