About Centre Pompidou

Europe's radical inside-out cultural centre, with all its pipes, ducts and structure on the exterior, housing the continent's largest collection of modern art.

The Centre Georges Pompidou is one of the most audacious buildings of the 20th century. Designed by Renzo Piano and Richard Rogers and completed in 1977, it turned the conventions of architecture completely inside out: every structural element, steel beams, air ducts (blue), water pipes (green), electricity conduits (yellow), and escalators (red), is boldly displayed on the exterior facade, leaving the interior as a completely open, flexible space.

When it opened, Parisians were appalled; they nicknamed it the "oil refinery" and the "inside-out building." Today it is one of the most beloved institutions in France, attracting over five million visitors a year. The Musée National d'Art Moderne inside is the largest collection of modern and contemporary art in Europe, with over 100,000 works covering every movement from Fauvism through Cubism, Surrealism, Abstract Expressionism to today. The rooftop terrace offers a spectacular panoramic view over Paris. The external escalators, enclosed in transparent tubes, offer a theatrical ascent with the city unfolding below.

Did you know? The building's colour-coded pipes are not random: blue = air, green = water, yellow = electricity, red = people movement (elevators and escalators).
