About Musée d'Orsay

The world's finest Impressionist museum, housed in a spectacular converted 1900 railway station, displaying masterworks by Monet, Renoir, Van Gogh and Degas.

The Musée d'Orsay houses the world's largest collection of Impressionist and Post-Impressionist masterpieces, set in the breathtaking surroundings of the converted Gare d'Orsay railway station. The station was built in 1900 for the Paris Exposition Universelle by architect Victor Laloux, cleverly disguised as a grand palace to fit the neighbourhood. By the 1970s it was considered for demolition, saved by Valéry Giscard d'Estaing and transformed into a museum that opened in 1986.

The collection spans 1848 to 1914, bridging the gap between the Louvre and the Pompidou. Among its treasures are Van Gogh's "Bedroom in Arles," Monet's "Blue Water Lilies" and canvases from his Rouen Cathedral series, Renoir's "Dance at Le Moulin de la Galette," Seurat's "The Circus," Toulouse-Lautrec's cabaret posters, Rodin's bronzes, and rooms of Degas's ballerinas. The great clock faces on the upper level offer iconic views over the Seine towards Sacré-Cœur.

Did you know? The Gare d'Orsay was almost demolished in the 1970s; it was saved and converted into a museum that opened in 1986 to worldwide acclaim.
