About Museo de Navarra
Navarre's leading regional museum, housed in a former 16th-century hospital, its collections span Roman mosaics, medieval Romanesque capitals, Gothic altarpieces, and Goya's portrait of the Marqués de San Adrián.
The Museo de Navarra is the principal regional museum of the autonomous community of Navarre, housed since 1956 in the restored former Hospital de la Misericordia (Hospital of Mercy), a distinguished Renaissance building of the early 16th century. The museum's collections trace the history and art of Navarre from prehistoric times to the 20th century. Highlights include: a Roman mosaic of the Muses from Arróniz (2nd century AD), recovered from a villa in the Estella area; a collection of exceptionally carved Romanesque capitals from the former cathedral cloister; the extraordinary Gothic frescos from the apse of the church of Olite; medieval and Renaissance altarpieces; and Francisco Goya's luminous portrait of the Marqués de San Adrián (1804), one of his finest aristocratic portraits and one of the great paintings in any Spanish regional museum.
Did you know? The Romanesque capitals in the Museo de Navarra were removed from the cloister of Pamplona Cathedral in the late 19th and early 20th centuries during restoration work, a common practice of the period that is now considered highly controversial, as it removed original sculptures from their architectural context. The capitals are of exceptional quality; some art historians consider the Pamplona cloister capitals among the finest Romanesque carvings in Europe.
