About Plaza del Castillo

The heart of Pamplona, the elegant arcaded main square where all life in the city converges, the social centre during San Fermín, and the location of the famous 'chupinazo' opening rocket that signals the start of the festival each July 6.

The Plaza del Castillo is the social heart of Pamplona, a large, elegant square surrounded by arcaded buildings whose ground floors shelter cafés, bars, and shops from the rain. The square was originally a jousting ground and later a bullring (the slightly oval shape betrays its history); the current uniform arcaded appearance was established in the late 18th century. Café Iruña (1888) occupies the most prominent position on the south side, and the Casino de Pamplona (now used as a cultural centre) is on the east. During San Fermín, the square becomes the epicentre of the festival: at noon on July 6, the mayor of Pamplona fires the opening rocket (chupinazo) from the balcony of the Town Hall (which overlooks the square from the east side), and the square and surrounding streets immediately fill with thousands of people dressed in white and red, singing, spraying champagne, and beginning the festival. The square is also the starting point for the evening paseo during the festival, when the old town streets fill with locals and visitors.

Did you know? The traditional song sung at the chupinazo and at the start of every encierro is 'A San Fermín pedimos, por ser nuestro patrón, nos guíe en el encierro, dándonos su bendición' ('We ask San Fermín, being our patron, to guide us in the encierro, giving us his blessing'), sung three times in Castilian Spanish and three times in Basque (Euskera).
