About Pamplona Cathedral & Gothic Cloister

A magnificent 14th-15th century Gothic cathedral with the finest Gothic cloister in Spain, the carved stone tracery of the cloister is considered one of the masterpieces of Gothic craftsmanship, and the cathedral contains the magnificent alabaster tombs of King Carlos III of Navarre.

The Cathedral of Santa María la Real in Pamplona is one of the finest Gothic buildings in northern Spain. The current cathedral was built in the 14th and 15th centuries on the site of an earlier Romanesque church (of which nothing survives), and its most celebrated feature is the Gothic cloister, universally considered the finest in Spain and among the finest in Europe. The cloister was built in the 14th century and features extraordinarily delicate stone tracery in its arched openings, each window different, with a richness and inventiveness of design that is exceptional even by the standards of Gothic art. The cathedral also contains the magnificent alabaster tombs of King Carlos III of Navarre (died 1425) and his wife Eleanor of Castile, a masterpiece of funerary sculpture in which the king and queen are depicted in lifelike detail surrounded by mourners in niches. The cathedral was given a severe Neo-Classical facade in 1783, replacing the original Gothic front, a decision that is now universally considered a mistake, but which makes the contrast with the exquisite Gothic interior all the more striking.

Did you know? The tracery of Pamplona Cathedral's cloister is so complex and delicate that experts believe different masters were responsible for different sections, comparing the designs across the cloister is like reading a catalogue of 14th-century Gothic invention, with each archway representing a different experiment in stone lacework.
