About Portal de Francia & Camino de Santiago Entry
The medieval gateway through which Camino de Santiago pilgrims from France have entered Pamplona since the 11th century, the Portal de Francia (France Gate) marks the official start of Stage 3 of the Camino Francés within the city walls.
The Portal de Francia (France Gate) is the principal medieval gateway through the northern wall of Pamplona, and the point through which Camino de Santiago pilgrims entering from France have historically arrived in the city. The current gate structure dates from the 16th century (the medieval gate was rebuilt as part of the 16th-century fortification of Pamplona), but the route it marks, coming down from the Pyrenees through Roncesvalles, following the River Arga valley through Zubiri and Zuriáin, and entering Pamplona from the north, has been the standard pilgrim route from France since the 11th century. The Portal de Francia is decorated with the scallop shell (venera), the symbol of the Camino de Santiago, and serves as the ceremonial entry point for modern pilgrims. From the gate, the Camino route runs through the old town to the Plaza del Castillo and then southwest out of the city towards the next stage at Puente la Reina.
Did you know? Roncesvalles (Orreaga in Basque), the Pyrenean monastery 47 km north of Pamplona where the Camino Francés route begins in Spain, was founded in 1132 specifically to shelter pilgrims crossing the Pyrenees. The battle of Roncesvalles in 778 AD, in which Charlemagne's rearguard was ambushed (by Basques, not Moors, despite the later literary elaboration), is the subject of the Chanson de Roland, the oldest surviving work of French literature.
