About Arga River Valley & Magdalena Bridge

The medieval bridge through which Camino de Santiago pilgrims officially enter the historic city of Pamplona, the Puente de la Magdalena dates from the 12th century and spans the Arga River below the city walls, with the riverbank park a popular walking route.

The Puente de la Magdalena (Magdalene Bridge) is the medieval bridge that marks the point where Camino de Santiago pilgrims traditionally cross the Arga River and enter Pamplona. The bridge dates to the 12th century and is one of the few surviving medieval bridges on the Camino Francés route; its three arches, built of limestone blocks, have spanned the Arga for over 800 years. The bridge is pedestrian-only today and provides the finest view of the northern face of the Pamplona city walls and the citadel above. The Arga River valley below the walls has been developed into a linear park (Parque Fluvial), a popular walking and running route that follows the river for several kilometres. The landscape visible from the bridge, medieval walls above, willows along the riverbank, the distant silhouette of the Pyrenees, has been the arrival view for pilgrims for over eight centuries.

Did you know? The 'Stage 3' of the Camino Francés (Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port to Pamplona, sometimes done as two stages via Roncesvalles) is considered the most scenic and also the most physically demanding stage for most walkers. The crossing from the Orisson pass (1,450m) to the Port de Cize and down to Roncesvalles (900m) involves approximately 1,400m of ascent and descent; in poor weather (rain, snow, or fog), which occurs frequently even in summer, navigation can be difficult and exposure to cold is significant.
