The medieval walls of Ostuni, partially surviving, partially rebuilt, encircle the old city and provide a spectacular elevated walkway with panoramic views over the olive grove landscape stretching to the Adriatic coast and beyond. The walls were originally built in the medieval period and were reinforced and expanded by successive rulers. The surviving sections date primarily from the 15th and 16th centuries, when Ostuni was an important fortified city in the Kingdom of Naples. Several of the original towers survive, incorporated into later buildings or standing alone. The wall walk, about 2 kilometres in total, passes through several small piazzas, past baroque churches and palaces, and offers continuous views over the surrounding landscape that are among the finest in Puglia.
