The Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta is the architectural centrepiece of Ostuni and one of the most unusual and beautiful churches in Puglia. Built between 1435 and 1495 by a series of master builders, the cathedral represents an extraordinary fusion of Gothic and early Renaissance architectural ideas realised in the local golden limestone, in a style that is closely related to the Leccese Gothic of the great churches of the Salento. The facade is dominated by a spectacular circular rose window, its central wheel divided into twenty-four rays, surrounded by elaborate stone carving in a radiating pattern. The facade also features three portals decorated with the kind of intricate stonework characteristic of the Leccese workshop tradition. The building is the highest point of the historic centre, and its silhouette is a defining feature of the Ostuni skyline visible from the surrounding countryside.
