About Torre Velasca

Milan's most distinctive postwar building, a 106-metre skyscraper designed by BBPR studio (1958) with a dramatically cantilevered upper section that evokes medieval Lombard towers, considered one of the masterpieces of postwar Italian architecture.

The Torre Velasca, completed in 1958, is one of the most discussed and debated buildings in postwar European architecture. Designed by the BBPR studio (Banfi, Belgiojoso, Peressutti, and Rogers), it is a 106-metre reinforced concrete skyscraper whose upper floors dramatically cantilever out beyond the shaft, creating a form that simultaneously evokes the medieval towers of Italian communes and a nuclear-age industrial structure. The building was controversial from the moment of its completion, the International Style modernists disapproved of its historicist references; Italian traditionalists disapproved of its modernity, and this controversy has ensured its continued discussion. It is now widely regarded as one of the masterpieces of postwar Italian architecture and a key example of the specifically Italian approach to modernism that sought to engage with historical and contextual references rather than rejecting them. The building is best viewed from the Corso di Porta Romana to the south.

Did you know? The Torre Velasca was presented at the 10th Milan Triennale in 1954, as a design proposal, not a built work, and immediately generated an international controversy about whether historicist references were acceptable in modern architecture.
